What's a good price to pay for Punta Cana Dominican Republic in October?

...I want to go to an all inclusive 4 star or 5...my friends say it's around $400 if i book in September.

Your friends are right about the price for september. it should be $400 for 4 star hotel and $400-600 for 5 star hotel (tax not included). Its pretty cheep, but i warn you september is a pretty wet season. September is the 2nd greatest rainfall month. This is because of its the peak of the hurricane season. If you go hopefully your week is sunny. Your taking a risk.

For October, a good price package for a 4-5 star hotel for a week is $550-700. Its still quite rainny, but not as bad as september.

$400 dollars for how long? including air fare? that price means nothing without details.

also a word of caution about the use of trip advisor. do NOT look at the comments people make on there. it will only put ideas into your head as to how yoru vacation can go wrong. book a trusted hotel and think of it as an adventure. I recommend the iberostar punta cana/ dominicana. 5 star hotel. cost effective. will live up your standards most likely.

oh wow Im planning on going to punta cana also in october.  Go to expedia.com and check out the packages they have for it . Oh by the way just because expedia says they are 4 or 5 star hotels doesn't mean that they are all that good. Look up info about them on trip advisor.com it helps alot when deciding on which resort to choose.

$ 400 us per day without airfare you mean? Here in Puerto Plata ( the best of all) there are hotels for 450 us per day without breakfast. I don't know if the tourist Punta Cana has such type of hotels. Just talk to your travel agent, he/she will give you the best info.
