Question:

What's a good red wine?

I have bought so many different kinds and brands of wine, but can't find any I like. I tried Merlot and Rhine and didn't care for them. What I'm looking for is a semi-sweet red wine...not bitter or real dry, but not real sweet. Any wine experts out there? Thanks.

  1. Rhine wine is white ....  Try a California cabernet or merlot, or a pinot noir or beaujolais (which are lighter).  You won't like zinfandel though....

  2. Problem with your preference is all normal wines are dry in fact they are bone dry.  No matter what grape you get they are dry.  Only a few reds from France (and it escapes me which) have any sugars left in them at all.  A Riesling from Germany has residual sugar but that's white.  The only wines with sugar are dessert wines (which are perfectly fine) but these are harder to find and usually in a whole different section.  As far as lighter red (I'm speaking of standard dry reds) Pinot Noir is my favorite but California Zinfandels are nice as well as spanish Riojas.

  3. try a red zinfandel

  4. A good one would be a Blackberry Merlot, or a Cherry Merlot. Merlot is a fairly dry wine on it's own, but when mixed with other berries, it sweetens up quite a bit. Pinot Noir might be too dry for you, as would a Cabernet.

Fredonia is one that is a little more on the sweet side, without being like simple syrup with grape flavoring. It also has a really light red color to it. I know that East Coast wineries make a lot of it, so it depends on where you are, if you'll be able to get it or not.

Checking out a winery or a specialty wine shop is a good place to try out wines. You can tell them what you're looking for, and they'll try and match the wine to your preferences.

Wine only has one purpose. It's to be enjoyed, so enjoy it to the fullest. =o)

  5. It sounds like you might like a very soft and light red wine with very little tannins.  I would recommend you try a Pinot Noir or a Beaujolais.

    .

  6. If looking for a semi-sweet in a red wine try one of the following:

    1.  Recioto Classico della Valpolicella

    2. Torcalato

Both are sweet wines from the Tre Venzie region of Italy.

Italian desserts and sweet wines are generally not as sweet as their French counterparts.

  7. Go for a nice California Zinfandel or a Willamette Valley (Oregon) Pinot Noir. Willamette Valley Pinots are as close to a Burgundy as you are going to get in the US. Most are reasonable priced and go great with food. My personal favorite Zins come from Paso Robles, CA. Some great producers are 4 Vines, Eberle, Turley, Peachy Canyon and Justin. If you can find any of the single vineyard designates from Ravenswood those are great wines as well, just beware the Vintners Blend as it is not quite as good as the single vineyard designates.

  8. It really depends on your taste. Both my wife and I are big wine snobs, but each of us like different things. I prefer dark rich red wines like Malbec and Zinfandel (7 Deadly Zins, is a good one), she prefers Cabs and Pinot (try Pinot Evil). However I rarely buy a wine that I have not tasted, so go to some wine tastings and decide what it is that you like. Good wine is in the mouth of the taster.
