What's a good salary to make in Las Vegas?

My husband and I are considering moving to Las Vegas from Rhode Island. He's a food and beverage director at a high-end hotel here... and he may find a job there as well considering the hospitality industry there. It's just us... we would like to buy a house and start a family. What would be a good salary for him as I would be a stay at home mom?

  1. Even though locals complain, Vegas is still a very affordable city compared to many other major cities. Espcially touristy cities.

50k would be fine for him, without you working.

  2. The Starting Salary question is hard to answer. It depends on where he is employed and how much experience or education your hubby has . Check the hotel websites career areas.  The strip casinos usually pay well, but they are very hard to get into.  It helps to know someone who can speak for  you.  Most people in the hospitality industry start off at a suburban casino or downtown, and the payisn'tt the greatest.  (Especially Station casinos!!!!)   Please note the cost of living on the west coast is higher than a lot of places! Vegasisn'tt the best place to raise kids.  The public schools aren't very good!  My kids attended private schools when we lived in Vegas.  The best places to house hunt, in this order Summerlin Area (Western Las Vegas) Green Valley Ranch area, (Henderson, just south of Vegas), Aliante area(Far North, North Las Vegas Planned Community). Even though we are in a mortgage crisis, these communities arepriceyy.

  3. Whatever the employer is willing to pay. Las Vegas is not known for its strong wages or generous employers unfortunately. Cost of living is generally cheaper but it depends on the area you live in. Summerlin, Anthem, Aliante, Centennial Hills, and Southern Highlands will all be higher end. Areas of Henderson/Green Valley aren't bad, I live there.

If he is going for a Director of Food and Beverage he is going to need some good connections or one h**l of a resume. Casino jobs are surprisingly not easy to get here.

I advise you to simply be smart, do your research, and don't think life is easy in Las Vegas. It can be but still a lot of challenges here with traffic, weather, and people.
