Question:

What's a good site to find out about the dynamics of formula one racing?

I was just watching Formula One racing on Speed Network and started realizing that it was nothing like I had previously thought it was. I used to think that the drivers were all driving on the same vehicles, the same tires, same everything, and that the races were usually tight-ended, highly technical races that required nerves of steel, as well as that they all drove by the book, perfect lines (as impossible as this sounds, and probably is). Less than a half an hour watching Formula One races shattered all those conceptions about Formula One. Now that I've got my feet wet in televised coverage of the world of Formula One, I'm quite interested in the dynamics of the races, cars, factoring in human error, etc. I'd love to learn more it. Since what at first seemed very simple to me is now exceedingly complex. I've already checked out formula1.com, and it has the statistics I might desire, but certainly not an explanation of the experience or the dynamics that govern Formula One races,

  1. there is a site called shell formulae 1 racing. I went to it and you can all the info there and also a chance to receive some real classy stickers sent thru the post.

  2. i find the best place to learn is by watching the friday practice sessions, pre-race and pre-qualifying shows will will give you some technical insight, but during friday practice matchet and hobbs give all kinds of good technical nuggets

  3. http://www.formula1.com

I became a fan back in the last days of Sir Jack Brabham. My Brother was lucky enough to do his apprenticeship with Repco & did a small amount of work on some Repco Brabhams in the Repco plant here in Maidstone Australia. I got even more into it when Alan Jones became World Champion as this made Australian Television Network Owners start televising the races here. But we still get a second rate coverage. Try to get a newspaper called Auto Action, as its writers are basic guys who dont fluff it up. The best way to follow it is to watch every race from start to finish regardless of the time of day it is telecast. And never miss a second. Remember - 5 4 3 2 1 Go Then watch the mid & tail runners at the first corner. Try to pick up a video called Nikki Lauda Explains Formula 1 & show all your mates who think V8 touring cars are fast. Monaca is statisticaly slow & boring but consider the speed on those short straights after slowing to an almost stop to turn an incline hairpin or go through a tunnel then around a swimming pool. Just keep watching the races you will learn a lot more. In car cameras are also a buzz on HD large screens. Try to get to at least one race as well. You will see less but realise their true speed.

  4. In my experience, this site is the best if you don't have a degree in physics: http://www.f1technical.net/ It's not just technical, it has all the news as well.
