What's a good substitute for a Honda CRV? a smaller car, cheaper but something of that class?

my wife wanted a CRV but we couldn't afford it. i don't want to buy a pre-owned/second hand one just to own CRV.

so we'd better off buying a new one but a smaller, cheaper version or something somewhat similar to it. any brand will do.
