What's a good suburb in Sydney, Australia, to live in?

My hubby's work wants us to transfer there but I don't know the city at all. He would be working in the west. We want a really nice family oriented suburb with decent housing around the $500,000 range. Any suggestions?

  1. You want him to avoid commuting if possible, so you will have to live in the west - which has a stigma attached, but really there are plenty of great suburbs out there.  Mind you Western Sydney is a massive area, so easier to list the areas I would personally avoid:  Mt Druit/St Marys, Lakemba/Punchbowl, Bankstown, Liverpool.  The further west you go the better value you will get.  The North West is more affluent, with lots of new, big houses (Ie, Kellyville, Hills district), and with the housing market the way it is, you'll get good value there now.  Only problem is that the NW is the worst (and this is saying something in Sydney) for traffic, lack of public transport, and cost of tolls.  If your hubby is working anwhere south of the M4, get a place in the Sutherland Shire, there's some nice newer houses at places like Barden Ridge/Menai, and this area has good access north up into the western suburbs via Alfords Pt Rd (F6)

  2. Camden. and don't be thinking anything about the whole "a racist town" thing, cos it's not true!! Camden is just a really nice, calm, country town

  3. Sutherland Shire.

It's not in the west, but it fits the qualities you want.

  4. Blacktown, which is a suburb to City Of Blacktown.

It is also the largest of any suburb in New South Wales.

    Lovely place.

    Have family that lives there.

  5. As a general rule in Sydney, anything North of the Harbor Bridge is safe for the average white 1.5 kids family. If you have half a million Australian dollars, its enough.

Stay away from Redfern, Lakemba and Punchbowl, avoid any suburbs in the Southwest.

  6. the best place thats very decent and in popular to live in is castle hill and its surrounding suburbs..

    its like an middle/upper-class suburb

they have a very nice shopping center and the general area and the housing is quite nice

but if you want something in the west thats a litter more hustle bustle cityish go to parramatta. alot of oppertunitys there oppsed to living somewhere thats a hole like the other western suburbs like blacktown, merrylands, liverpool etc.

    i hope this helps :)
