Question:

What's a good supplement that will help prevent my jenny's from getting hoof fungus?

The vet has me giving them NU FOOT, but one of my jenny's is still having problems getting rid of the fungus. Our farrier has trimmed the front left hoof even with the right foot twice. One side is healed, and now the other is infected with fungus. In addition to their regular care, I was wondering if there was a better supplement I could use?

Thanks

  1. i think that a lot of that kind of stuff doesnt work( but that is my opion) but i think picking out his her everyday or twice a day would be a vary good thing to do that should help a alot

  2. Bactakil 55 is a good topical applicant for fungal infections. My TB x had a fungal infection in his feet which resulted in 6 months rest without shoes (caused originally by an unreliable farrier - horse kept casting shoes and his feet cracked, fungus got in and didn't want to leave! I have now changed my farrier!!!!!). Also, a mix of raw linseed oil (or veggie oil if you can't get that) and iodine, applied daily, is a good way of keeping feet supple and infection-free. Linseed oil is available from most DIY stores and is for oiling cricket bats/wood. You want raw not cooked. Add this 6 parts oil to 2 parts iodine (available from the chemist). I feed my horse a supplement called Event, it is very expensive but I owe my horse's soundness to it. His white line has thickened and his overall condition is excellent as a result. My (new) farrier recommended it, I have tried most feed supplements (including; farrier's formula, formula for feet, and many many more) and this has by far exceeded them in quality. I am now bringing my horse off it, he did 18 months on it and my farrier is amazed. He has seen it turn around horses who were about to be put to sleep due to chronic foot problems. Feel free to email me on petsandponies@aol.co.uk if you want any more advice, I've been where you are and am now coming out the other side! Good luck, it is a long road once a fungal infection takes hold but there is light at the end of the tunnel!!! Also, Old Mac hoof boots are great for keeping hooves relatively clean in bad weather, though I'm unsure if they are available for donkeys. Another thing I did with my horse was to wash his feet with a scrubbing brush and Hibiscrub after he came in from the field, then apply the iodine/oil mix. I've listed some links you may find helpful.

Add: Camrosa ointment is also a good topical application for improving hoof condition, I use it now my horse is over the worst and only use the iodine/oil once a week, along with one squirt of Bactakill55 once a week too. http://www.camrosa.co.uk/
