Question:

What's a good sushi for a first-time sushi eater?

I have acquired a taste for vegetarian sushi, but would like to try "real" sushi and I'm afraid I will hate it. I don't really like fish but I'm willing to give sushi a try. Are there any not-so-fishy tasting ones?

  1. Inari is very nice, little bags made of tofu filled with rice seasoned with sweet rice vinegar.

Also, though this isn't vegetarian, unagi is nice. It's actually eel, but don't let that scare you.  It is very mild flavored and has a delightful texture.

When you get more adventurous, sit near the sushi chef and watch him.  They are all show-offs at heart.  If you get him into a conversation, he will give you little things to try.  I guarantee you will love them!  Just don't ask what they are.  8^)  I am also a little nervous about fish, especially raw fish, but I've never gotten one of these treats that wasn't really good!

  2. Try sushi rolls before you try sushi.  Maybe a spicy tuna roll.  Those are very popular and not fishy at all.  Once you try a couple of rolls with different fish, you might try sushi (fish with rice on the bottom).

If you're feeling really adventurous, rainbow rolls are good to try: california roll (imitation crab, avocado and cucumber) with various fish on top.

  3. I'm not an expert but I think yellowtail isn't so bad. You can always try the packaged deal with the fake crab, those really aren't too strong.

  4. I would try tempora first. It is lightly fryed. Salmon and tuna are always good and aren't that fishy.

  5. inside out california role

  6. The California roll is probably the most common for beginners, but definitely NOT the best. Sushi rolls come in many flavors & with many fillings. If you don't like raw things in your sushi, ask the chef to make a special roll for you with any of the items that you do like such as shrimp tempura, imitation crab, chicken...whatever. The chef can make it as sweet, spicy or savory as you like it. Be brave & enjoy. It's VERY GOOD!

  7. California rolls are yummy and very safe. The tamago is also very good.
