What's a good target time?

I'm just beginning a running program, to get in shape and lose some weight. I'm not very fit, so I can't run very long or fast.

Right now I do about 2 miles on the treadmill, mostly power walking and jogging combined. Eventually I want to be able to run the whole way. What's a good target time to run two miles in for a new runner?

  1. for 2 miles i.e., 3.2km it must take 15-16 minutes

  2. When it comes to times, the best thing to do is to compete against yourself. See how long it takes you to run/walk the distance. Set a reasonable time frame, and then do the same thing. As long as you keep at it, the new you will always beat the old you and with continued improvement, you will notice a difference.

  3. I would say about 18 minutes. Fitness standards for a 9th grader male is 9 minutes for ONE mile, so TWO mile should be in about 18 minutes.

  4. I would say 10 minutes if you are walking/jogging. If that is easy then try to hit 18 minutes- 9 min for each mile.

  5. For a beginner, 20-22 minutes for 2 miles is just fine. If you're slower than that, you're a bit below the average but you shouldn't despair because your fitness will improve soon.

If you're faster than that, congratulations. With some training, you might even become a competitive runner one day.
