What's a good thing to carry for self-defense for a petite female?

should i carry pepper spray, a concealed small knife, or what? should i even carry anything at all? i work late and always have to go in isolated parking lots at work and at home. my home area is pretty safe though. will these things just work against me? and please tell me why.

i'd say pepper spray...

knives can turn on you pretty easily and you have to know how to use it well for it to actually help you.

Get an asp (extendable baton) they are small and you can carry it in your hand and no one knows that what it is until you extend it. Its great cause you cant cut yourself or spray yourself unlike knifes or pepper spray. You can kick a** with it!

take self defence classes & carry pepper spray. Don't carry a weapon. I go to cosmetology school in a bad area and the teachers there recomended that we carry the key-chain pepper spray that are available at sports supply store and other various places behind the counter.

i walk to work every day and i always carry pepper spray in my purse. the neighborhood i live in is not very good and all though no one has ever tried anything i know that if anyone where ever to try something i could just reach in and grab it. i don't know that i would carry a knife because i always am reaching in my purse and knowing me i'd probably cut myself lol. hope that helped

Pepper spray if you feel the need to be protected. It would be real easy to take a concealed knife away from a petite female. I would also suggest you taking self defense classes.

u should take classes of self difence so u don't need to carry anything around oor u can carry around a cell phone the best weapon put police or people that can help on speed dial

Look this is a serious question and definitely deserves a serious answer.  The real reason anybody takes self defense classes is because everyone tells them too.  they really will not help you defend against a large man intent on harming you.  So the only reason to even take one is to get an idea of how to be physically aggressive if you ever need to. (hope you don't)

As far as guns and tazers - bad idea.  Many peoiple are typically surprised or caught off guard.  If you have these weapons and a man sneaks up behind you and grabs you from behind across your throat, you will not have time to pull out a gun. and if you did, it could be his in seconds.

PEPPER SPRAY is definitely the way to go.  it is important that you spray a bit in a closed room where you are so you can know what the effects are though.  We all act differently when we get maced/sprayed.  In the ARMY we had to stand in a room (concrete bunker) while CS gas filled the room.  Pretty much no attacker can continue an attack after being maced.  It's physically not possible.  It gives you plenty of time to run to safety.  I was maced a while back during a fight and i went unconscious.  The guy maced me at point blank range and emptied his can on me.

It burns the h**l out of your eyes, and creates major breathing problems.  

They even make pepper spray that fits in a ring.

In the event that you ever need to defend yourself, simply spraying someone while they walk up to you can be illegal, believe it or not.  So if you ever mace anybody, just get the h**l out of there.

It is true that women who are obviously aware of the surroundings and walk purposefully to their cars with their key ready are less likely to be hurt.  A predator will seek out a girl that looks a lot less difficult to apprehend, just like the way wild animals attack injured or young.

If you keep your head up and look around while walking you should be safe.  However listening to an Ipod or talking on the phone while casually sauntering along to your car, having to fiddle around for your keys,  UNSAFE

Also, pay attention to cars parked by you when you park, and pay attention to anybody that may seem to be just sitting in thier car close to where you are parked.  Try allways to park in well lit areas.  Always lock your car when you get in. and start it immediately.

Many attacks happen when a person gets in their car, they sit there messing about, next thing you know a guy is coming through the passenger side.  In dark areas some times predators wait under your car or nearby cars.  Be aware of that.  I believe it is extremely rare that anybody is ever in your car waiting, thats just movie stuff.

just make sure your car is maintained well and your not stranded.

A concealed handgun or a tazer, or at least a bit of pepper spray. Don't waste time/money on those self defense classes.
