What's a good type of guitar to purchase?

I'm looking to buy my first guitar, I've only learned a few chords and songs before and I enjoyed playing, but I have no idea what type to buy. I don't want one that is super expensive, two hundred is my max, but I don't want one of the cheapo ones you can buy at walmart. any suggestions as to good brands, and how to tell what a good guitar from a bad one?

You should try Gibson as a starter or you can go to any good music shop and tell all the details and they will better guide you in this.
