I've been wanting marshmallows for a few days, but I can't have them because I don't eat gelatin. What should I eat instead?

  1. Find a homemade recipe. Or a gelitin sub

  2. I think Fluff is vegan.

  3. I totally don't remember what they're called, but places like Whole Foods actually have veggie mellows for sale.

  4. Ingredients:

    2 oz arrowroot powder

    1/2 cup cold water

    2 cups granulated sugar

    2/3 cups corn syrup

    1/4 cup water

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    1 Tablespoon vanilla extract

    Confectioners' sugar for dredging

From here on proceed like a regular marshmallow recipe.

substituting arrow root for gelatin I don't have time to try this one out before I answer I think...  you may need a tad more arrow root but try it out.

Oh you should try banana soup that's a good recipe.

  5. Marshmellow fluff.

  6. Well if you are a pescetarian, you can buy kosher marshmallows, which uses fish gelatin instead of pig.

  7. Check the ingredients on "marshmallow fluff" - once upon a time it was vegetarian (though not vegan) but I haven't looked at a jar in years and formulas change.  If you have a Whole Foods, you may be able to find "Sweet & Sara" marshmallows, which are vegan and very good (although significantly more expensive than the gelatinous variety.)  They also make s'mores.  There is a brand of "ricemallow fluff" that is definitely vegan, although I don't know where you can find it (Whole Foods would be the place to start unless you have a vegan grocery in your area.)  There's also a company called Angel Food out of New Zealand that sells kits with all the ingredients for making your own vegan marshmallows - you'd have to mail order them so it wouldn't help with your current craving, but it might be fun to make your own.
