What's a good violin for a beginner?

I'm trying to buy my boyfriend a violin for his birthday. He used to play the violin about ten or so years ago. He hasn't played since then. However, he has hinted that he would like to get started again, but I know nothing about violins.

What is a good violin that is under or about $300 - $400? I don't want to ask someone from a violin store, as I'm afraid they'll try to rip me off. Post links. :)

A good company won't rip you off.

  4. Make sure that the instrument has ebony fingerboard and pegs. Do not accept rosewood etc.

You might check with a local violin teacher for help.
