  1. Talk to them within catching waves.

       DON'T surf their wave

Tell them really good places to catch waves

Tell them you admire their surfing, and their board

Ask them to teach you some of their own personal tricks

  2. go to the outside with them, make frendly conversation between catching waves

also hang out at surf stores and talk about bords, fins, the surf today, or even traction pads

  3. when you're out in the water you can talk to them and ask about other surf spots. Don't drop in on them...ever.

Hang out in surf stores and talk, invite them to a party you know about, and just act like a friend!

  4. you buy them a new surfboard

  5. How to make friends, or get tight with someone is a social skill. The best thing that you can do with strangers in the line up is to leave them alone, and stay out of their way.

I almost always smile and say high to the people beside me in the line up, and if small talk erupts, I certainly join in. I talk about the Weather, the waves, my board his/her board, etc. However, if folks don't smile back, I just paddle on down the line. I can handle solitary surfing just as well as the 'group' thing.

So, be nice and friendly, but don't be pushy, or act like you are in desperate need of friends, that's not why folks go surfing. Friendly people will reciprocate, and you'll  make friends. I have been surfing since '66, and I still have acquaintances from the '60s that I met in the line up.

  6. Make small talk, Don't Drop in on them, Offer them the set wave, share your wax,

  7. Well, its interesting you say this, because a surf mag recently ran an article titled, "No Friends? Go surf."

And its true. Surfing can be great for socializing and meeting other people. Search the resolved questions for surfing rules, so you know what not to do. When you paddle out, say whats up or your own variation. Don't make idle chatter or be overly friendly, that can be annoying when someone's just looking for a relaxing sesh. Be careful of intruding on groups or locals, too. Be friendly but not overly so.

Also, try the surf shop. When you go in to get something like wax, etc, talk to the shop guys. Trust me, working in a surf shop can be really boring and the guys are welcome to any distraction. Be like, oh those waves yesterday were sick, were you out? Something like that. Just be chill with others. Easiest is to get a friend to introduce you to others in the lineup.
