I'm looking for ideas for a public service announcement commercial that demonstrates what you should do when you drop a tire off the paved surface on to the shoulder. Often times when this happens people jerk the wheel to get back on the road, pressure builds up between the tire and the vertical edge of the pavement until the car finally hops back on the pavement across the road and into the ditch on the other side. How can this be demonstrated in a 60 second commercial?

  1. Video camera in the wheel well and on the rocker panel so people can see what happens when the tire grinds against the higher road. Also have a camera showing the whole car and what happens. Stress slowing down before trying to get back on the road as there are less forces (the tire cameras will show this) when the car is moving slower. A good engineer could develop calculations of the dynamic forces and how they grow exponentially at higher speeds. Have local authorities close off a section of road or go to a private driving coarse to do this safely. Include a flash of a crashed car that didn't heed the above.

  2. Keep your steering straight, and focus your eyes where you want your car to go.

Your hands follow  your eyes, and that's how your brain works.

Look well ahead in the direction you intend to travel, come off the gas, don't brake yet...............allow your car to naturally slow down and focus on your steering. Keep steering as straight as possible. Once your carhas slowed down to a managable speed, then gently brake to a stop well off the roadway. If you have a flat tire, you will feel a "pull" in the direction of the flattened tire.

If you have wandered off the edge of the road surface with your right tire, then come off the accelerator, don't brake, focus on steering, keeping your vision well ahead where you want to go, and when your car has slowed down enough

look well ahead up the center of your intended path of the lane you are about to enter, and hold the steering wheel firmly, steering minimally, as your wheels come back up to the road surface. Because you are looking well ahead up your intended lane and because your speed is lower, you should have no problem "swerving"....I hope that helps.

    Good luck in your project....
