  1. ING Direct's Sharebuilder is a pretty simple online brokerage firm.  You can start off with investing any amount, and they will even help you build a portfolio based on your own needs.  

    That's how I got started.


  2. I personally use Schwab.  Investments aside, I liked their checking account that gave a good interest rate (much better a few months ago!).  Also, they reimburse all ATM fees no matter where you are.  Very convenient to not care where I take money out.

    Trades, however, are $7.95 which can be a significant percentage of small investments since its 7.95 to buy, and 7.95, of course, to sell.  By no means exorbitant, but significant, yes.

      I am unfamiliar with Zecco.com, but I'm pretty sure they off free online trades.  Scottrade.com is good as well, not sure what the prices are though.
