The environment friendly club at my school is trying to get people to participate in composting and they just keep throwing stuff away.

  1. Think of something that will make it fun. You can always find something to keep the club alive. Unfortunately if they are not sold on the idea of composting your shot down before you start. Make it a competition with one group against the other...Those that win will enjoy a ice cream buffet!

  2. Give them candy!

  3. Pay them. Not necessarily with money, but most people won't do anything if they are not going to get 'instant reward' for it. Composting or recycling doesn't provide an instant benefit for most people, so they don't care. Volunteer work is always done by the same people...

If you want someone to do something they normally won't, you have to give them some kind of incentive: put their name in a draw for something every time they contribute.

It's sad, but that's the way most people are... selfish... "What's in it for me?"
