Question:

What's a good way to indicate this on a resume/job application?

I have a Master's Degree in Library Science. However, there are not a lot of job postings for librarians around here (in the town where I live). However, there are a LOT of senior library assistant jobs that I know I could do (the job descriptions aren't that different from entry-level librarian positions). I've sort of discovered though that they may not want to hire me for these jobs because I'm "over-qualified." Is there a way to specify on the job application that even though I have the degree in library science, I'm more than willing to take on lower-level positions (without sounding too unprofessional).

  1. You can leave off the masters, but I don't advise it as down the road they're likely to find out you have one. You may mention it at work. You may meet someone at conference who knows you from school.

To get the right job for you, present your full background. You can mention that you are willing to take the lower position now. If they like you and think you'd fit in with the staff, you're bound to get the job.

  2. Willing to start at the bottom and work my way up!

  3. They are afraid that you will leave them when you get a better offer, and they are being frank in telling you you are overqualified.

Try looking at some of the listings in the Library Journal magazine or Booklist. The Chronicle of Higher Education also has librarian listings, and they have a web site too (just chronicle.com, no "www"). You should be prepared to leave the area if you have to, as you may not be able to find something where you are. You might also consider civil service, either state or federal. Good luck with your search!

  4. If your master's degree is too high-powered for a job you're willing to accept (and then presumably get promoted out of) then don't include it.  You have to tell the truth on your resume, but it doesn't have to be "the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."  A resume is supposed to paint a picture of the job you're seeking.  You want the overworked HR manager who has looked at 75 resumes that day to see your one-pager and shout out "Yes!  This is exactly who I had in mind for this job." Don't shoot yourself in the foot by including something that might give someone doubts about you.

  5. I used this resume writing service in my area, this is the email address, (resume.help50@yahoo.com) you should try them, it only cost me $35.00 and I got a great job from this new resume, I never thought about the format that they use but the turn around time was less then 24 hrs. I would have to say it was the best service I have ever used and it was worth every dime. Also they let me pay through paypal.
