What's a good way to say discretion would be great in a cover letter?

If I'm applying for a job, what's a good way to let the potential employer know that I'm looking for a job without my current employer's knowledge. Is there a general safe line to put in, like "I would appreciate full discretion in this matter."

  1. I am conducting a confidential job search to find a new position that will let me learn and grow.

  2. This happens all the time. The standard phrase is "Confidential job search. Please do not contact current employer at this time." Everyone understands that it's code for "they don't know I'm looking for a job" and no one will think less of you because of it.

However, do NOT give them your work number to call you back. Employers understandably assume that if you will use your current employers time and resources (printer, fax, copier, time) to search for a job, you will do the same to them. They are not understanding about this. Give your cell phone number, or home phone number.

  3. It may make a bad impression on the employer, as you may do the same thing to them if they are to hire you. Maybe contact them and ask if applications are confidential.

  4. This happens all the time. Many people look for a new job while they're working somewhere.

A prospective employer cannot contact your current employer without your permission. It's perfectly okay to say No on the application when it asks if they can call your current job.

Is it possible to avoid giving them your work number as way to contact you? Can you use an answering machine at home or a cell phone?

If the only way to contact you is at work, then write, "Please call me at x*x-yyy-zzzz. Because this is my work number, please be discreet when asking for me or leaving a message." Otherwise, there's no need to request discretion.
