  1. To limit the rpm, diesal engines are notorious for redlining.

  2. not only to keep it from over reving but it also holds the boats speed, think about a cruise control on a car, when a car goes up or down a hill the cruise control adjusts the throttle so you don't have to.when a wave etc. slows the boat the governor automatically adjusts the engine rpm.s

  3. to limit the maximum revs per minute. its normally fitted to the end of the injection pump.

  4. A governor is used as a speed limiting device.  It slows the engine down to prevent over rpms.  An over speed trip shuts the engine down to prevent major damage.

  5. A govenor on a diesel engine is used for setting Maximum rpm, Idle rpm and to Maintain rpm under a load. There are different types as well. For instance a generator has a govenor that keeps the engine spinning at the set rpm, as soon as it starts it is going at that rpm. A variable speed govenor allows the operator to set the rpm and then would maintain that speed, no matter what happens to the load ( like going uphill or downhill ).

  6. I know a lot of cars have a governor in it that makes it stop at a certain speed.

My friend used to have a truck that would no longer accelerate after it hit a hundred, which was good because usually by then, I was cowering in my seat praying for my life....

So thats probably whats on the boat, is a top out speed amount, however I believe governors can be removed by professionals, although not reccomended, they are there for a reason.

  7. To maintain full correct fuel & power under fulll loads>Safe operating range>

  8. I would think the same as in any engine, to keep you from over-reving.  Nothing worse then throwing a rod.

  9. to prevent engine from producing damaging r.p.m.'s

  10. I would assume it is used as the same on any engine. To control or limit the maximum RPM of the engine within the design parameters of the engine designers.
