  2. kind of depends. sometimes it's for children or adults who have problems that make them unadoptable. sometimes it's where teens go because they don't have anywhere else to put them. some group homes are good, some horrible. the state funds those homes.

  3. A place where foster/abandoned children live together. It usually has one big room with about 20 beds in it. Its a place for you to stay until they find you a foster family.

Im sorry you are having so much trouble with this sweetie...

Good Luck, and email me if you need to talk =]

  4. I worked in a residential treatment facility, which some people called a "group home".  I think at one point, the RTC actually WAS a group home (it started off as a catholic orphanage, and then morphed many times in its over 100 year history, but it has always been for kids).

The kids who came there (when I worked there) had behavioral, emotional, or mental issues anywhere from simple, normal "defiance" all the way to severe psychosis and/or criminal activity.  Depending on the child's needs, they were placed in different "cottages" that were set up to meet a variety of needs.  Every cottage has its own therapist, a nurse, and a ton of staff.  They did things like group and individual therapy, along with just normal every day stuff like school and mealtime.

I think every group home is different, and they all serve different purposes.  I've seen some places that only work with kids who have certain disorders, and I've seen places that work with normal kids who just don't have a place to go (foster home).  There are homes for developmentally disabled people (adults and kids), and for kids with addiction issues (like the place I work at now, which is actually a boarding school, but COULD be considered a type of group home).

So, I guess there isn't one answer.  There are many types of group homes, and just ten years ago, group homes were VERY different.  There have been a lot of advances in group homes, but also a lot more money-grubbin' jerks running the places (which sometimes negates all the advances that were made).

ETA:  Thanks, LT, for that clarification.  That's what I was trying to say, but it came out wrong.  I know the difference, but a lot of people don't, so I've heard boarding schools, RTC's, etc. lumped in with group homes.  The cottage I worked at could have been considered a group home when I first started there.  It was just a general transition house for teen girls moving from RTC to the community.  But it was still part of the RTC.

  5. Actually a group home is usually a home where there are between 6 and 100s of children who are in foster care.  There are no foster parents, but basically "staff" who work at the home.  Some homes are like a private house where there might be 6-10 children.   Some homes are like modern day orphanages where there are 100s of children living.

In general, the children attend regualar school.

I lived in a group home and it had 8 kids in it.  It was a normal house, but there were different staff that came and went.  I shared a room with 3 other girls (bunk beds).

But, I also was in a group home that was more like an orphange.  There were probably 100 kids.  It was sterile, cold and very institutialized.  It sucked.

A residential treatment center (RTC) is a home that cares for children with emotional or behavioral difficulties that CAN NOT live in a group home or a foster home.  RTCs usually have more staff, more therapy, and the kids usually goto school there, etc.  It is different than a "group home."  The children at RTCs are usually very disturbed or have many other issues.
