What's a handy/cool thing to have in the house?

I am preparing to move into an apartment with just me and my 2 1/2 year old son. I am looking around on Craigslist and Ebay for household items. Can you think of anything in particular that is handy to have?

Examples:

-a mini fride in some other part of the house (nah by the way)

-a toaster oven (man those things are handy!)

-a bunk bed for my son's room (cool for when a friend wants to stay)

A silent vacuum cleaner. I now own an Electrolux Ultrasilencer.

If you have a 2 1/2 year old son, it will be heaven-sent.

First, it is really silent. I can watch TV will vacuuming. This means you can vacuum even while your son is sleeping in the next room. Vacuuming is not such a chore when it doesn't sound like a dentist's drill.

Second, it is very efficient with adjustable power. I can clean my room (about 20sqm) in less than 15 minutes. I hate cleaning so I just vacuum, I suck the dirt out of every nook and cranny in the room. I don't dust or wipe as often. I know it's effective because my husband no longer gets allergic rhinitist attacks.

Those cube-shape footstools, that have storage in the bottom, and the tops double as a tray.  They're pretty cool.
