Question:

What's a humane way to kill frogs?

We have an infestation in our area of an invasive species of frog. Local fish and wildlife people say to kill them because they are killing off native frogs and other native species. I don't want to smash them and get guts everywhere, so I was thinking of just freezing them or suffocating them in plastic bags. Sounds awful...I know. Got any ideas?

  1. in my college the poem do this job for us so we dont know.but i think there is no way to kill any animal in a humane way becoz its not our job .so dont try the methods u mentioned above plzzz

  2. There are few humane ways to efficiently kill an infestation of frogs.  The problem is invasive species like that require a population level control which inevitably means some form of mass killing (e.g. by chemical or biological agents, or introduction of predators).

Nevertheless...lab science requires humane procedures, so that's where you can draw from.  There are two ways that lab frogs are killed.  The first is by gassing them with ether.  The second method is called double pithing; first the spinal cord is severed; then a needle is inserted down the spinal cord and into the brain to scramble the nervous connections.  The idea is to destroy anything that might feel pain.

Freezing is a slow death, bad idea.

  3. Forget God!  God has nothing to do with anything.  He didn't do this, "man" did.

Nature will always take care of itself IF man just leaves it alone.  If these frogs are NOT native and were accidentally introduced, then man HAS interfered and this is what has happened.  Non-indigenous animals will always s***w up the ecosystem if they are not eliminated.  The big huge Marine Toads in Australia are a perfect example.  They have messed up the ecology something awful.

If you are 100% positive that these frogs are truly harmful and are NOT native to your area, the best thing to do is catch them and release them where they DO belong.  If this is not practicle, it is far easier to control them in the tadpole stage than as adults.

If I knew what species of frog you were talking about, and exactly where you live,  I could be of better help.

When they are in the tadpole stage, you can release large NATIVE  fish, like maybe BlueGill, into the water and these will eat up the tadpoles.  You can even buy Dragonfly Larvae on the internet, and release those into the water.  They are veracious, and will catch and eat tadpoles too.   If these are not large frogs, Garter Snakes will eat 'em up too.

  4. have you done reserch on what type of food this frog is interested in? you could set up a trap and poison them. they would die quickly and without the mess.

  5. Try spreading mothballs around and force them to leave.

  6. yeah, killing things suck! i dont like all that animal murdering business, however.... i have mice in my house (i live in the country) and i have to put up mouse traps, otherwise they will take over...same with your frogs.  they are coming there because it must be a safe environment for them.  try to get turtles (but then you may get overrun by them...) maybe you could try to spray insecticide to help lower their food source...  you could dump bleach and water in front of your door or porch or wherever they are bothering you the most.  re-apply every few weeks. if you spray a little vinegar on them they will likely hop away... let me know...

  7. Is there no way to sell them as pets? That would be a great way to keep them alive, in control, and then they'll all eventually die out anyway.

If not, I don't believe there is any humane way to kill anything.

Do NOT suffocate them in a plastic bag!!! That IS awful. Thinking of it makes me want to puke.

I wonder if a form of smoking/gassing them out may work. I heard of somebody slowing down butterfly movement by means of smoke/smoking their air, and they didn't move so fast, which made them easier to photograph (cheating, in my books), and although it seems harmful, any fire would do so naturally, sooo we can't argue about nature being inhumane, can we? Heh.

Maybe introducing a small amount of cranes (other animals/birds) that eat the frogs into the area would help. Then they would become food for other animals.

PS: I wonder if the person above me believes that God did not intend for us to eat meat (why then, do we have canines AND molars?)... and whether or not they eat meat... hmm...

Probably do. I tend to ignore these types of potentially hypocritical responses.

  8. It is not your decision to take the life of someone else whether its a frog or a human. That is not what God wants so just let them go free instead of captivating them. Yes, it is awful so DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hope this helps!!! :]

  9. where do you live....can I have one please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
