  2. It is a very fast moving wind in the upper atmosphere. If a jet flies in it and the jet stream is blowing in the same direction as the jet is going, it saves lots of time and fuel for the journey.

  3. A jet stream is a fast narrow current of air found in the upper levels( particularly near the tropopause) characterized by strong vertical and lateral wind shears. This current is thousands of kilometre long, hundreds of kilometres wide and and a few kilometres thick. They develop over polar and sub-tropical areas at heights 10 -15 km where large differences in temperature and air pressure occur. The sub-tropical jet streams remain constant in position during a season whereas the polar jet streams change their position frequently during a season. They can reach speeds of 300 km/h,but average about 130km/h in summer and 70 km/h in winter. They are usually westerly winds but an easterly tropical jet stream is found over India at a mean height of 14 kms towards the end of June every year.It is found between 10 to 15 degrees North latitudes. When the south-west monsoon which is active during this period, is strong, this jet stream also becomes strong.
