What's a nice part of Los Angeles (County) that's close to a University that isn't too expensive to live in?

By expensive i mean there are apartments to rent that aren't ridiculously priced.

and by nice i mean no gunshots at night, and low crime rate.

any help would be great! :D

Riverside County is less expensive than LA County. It's pretty big, so there are good and "bad" areas there. Claremont is especially nice, but not cheap. Corona is less expensive and parts are very nice (borders LA County).
