Question:

What's a nice song to learn on the violin?

I've been playing the violin for a year now and I'm at about grade 3 or 4. As part of a summer project, I have to find sheet music for a song and learn to play it with all of the right dynamics without the help of my teacher.

There are a few songs that I really like but I think they are too advanced for me. I don't really like 'happy' and bouncy music. I prefer sad music with longer more slurred notes.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

  1. hrm, i would have to say, zigeunerweisen by Pablo Sarasate, or mendelssohn violin concerto in E minor (1st or 2nd movement), or if you're a lower level violinist than that, try praeludeum and allegro by kreisler, or try secilienne and rigaudon by kreisler!

    Just kidding,

I would say, look for Saint Saens' "The Swan" transposed for the violin, that is a happy but a very slurpy song. try looking through the suzuki books, they have lots of good material in it. Good Luck! :]

  3. The godfather theme song it's so sweet

  4. ONe of the first songs learned by my daughter (she's playing 4 years now) and it is beautiful was "Ode to Joy"  You can play the basics as taught in the first year or delve a little deeper into the song.  It is a beautiful piece and simple enough for you to play well.  I also went to the music store and bought beginner sheet music for her.  There was a large assortment to choose from.  Her likes are different than yours though, she likes blue-grass and Irish fiddle now, but I always hear her playing the "Disney Movie Songs" that I bought for her a few years ago.  Give it a try.  The song from Little Mermaid "Go on and Kiss the Girl" is beautiful.  Mostly have fun doing it.

  5. "Ashokan Farewell" by Jay Ungar.  Its a beautifully wistful and sad slow air in 3/4 time.  If you saw Ken Burn's documentary series on the Civil War that was shown on PBS a few years ago, you heard this tune a lot as it was one of the signature themes throughout the series. Its not too hard to play either.

  6. yea, ashokan farewell is good.

schlinder's list maybe??? might be too hard.

    bach minuet 1 or 3?

    chorus from judas macchabeaus

look around for a suzuki book 1 or 2.. maybe 3.

  7. Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden would be KILLER!  I've never heard it done before and I think YOU should be the one to do it!  Youtube it please!
