(where I work) applicant's keep calling to check the status of their application. we send out cards to say thanks for applying but nothing to say no thanks. We need some polite but firm way to say "Don't call us, we'll call you."

I know what you're thinking: why not just tell them their status? If only!

The hr mgr here has apps from April - we don't have enough positions avail for all the people she'd like to interview. Plus, this co. won't tell callers we're not hiring even though we don't have enough spots for the people we want to hire.

  1. As a job seeker... we are taught to aggressively pursue jobs, by making as many phone calls as possible, even if we are told that we will be contacted, In fact by calling back that is how I personally obtained 3 jobs.

My advice is to talk to your manager and to get them to start hiring people, and making the decisions!

Also, the company should change their policy about telling people we're not hiring. That sends the wrong message out that you either let people go quickly, or people don't stay there too long.

  2. That is what I detest about companies in general, no heart no consideration and it would be so easy to just be honest with job seekers. When they call you just give the standard "If there is interest we will call you; they are still reviewing apps."

  3. try "When a decision is made we'll get back to you" or "if you don't hear from us within 7 days,it automatically means we've selected another person for the position"..

  4. Well, i'm a true believer that if i'm interested in a position i really want to let that company know. So i'm sure the people who are calling are just trying to show that they are very interested. That said, you could say something along the lines of

"We thank all applicants in advance; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. "

  5. Your company should probably change their policy and follow up with a simple denial letter.  "Thank you for taking the time to apply at our company.  We have reviewed your application and unfortunately do not feel you have the qualifications we want for this position.  We will keep your application on file and, should another position open that is more appropriate for your skill set, we will contact you."

That will eliminate the calls, except for those people who want to know precisely why they didn't get the job.

  6. Just tell them '' It's okay, you don't have to call us. Our phone lines are company paid and we'll call you back as soon as possible. It is a cheaper and better way for both of us''. Simple....

  7. Ugh I know how you feel! My last job was Customer Service at a department store and every day we'd have a bunch of people calling about their application. We had a speech all written out on what to say. But I didn't like it, it was too fake & mean I thought, so I always said something along the lines of, "Currently they are reviewing all applications and if our HR is interested they will contact you to set up an interview."   I think that's polite & professional enough and getting the message across..I hope this helps!!! :-)

  8. Thank you for applying , but unfortunatley we don't have any available positions . thank you for applying .

  9. "Thank you for your followup and interest in the position.  Unfortunately, I have no information on your application, you will either be contacted by phone for a second interview or mailed a letter to inform you of the status of your application."
