What's a quick, effective way to get rid of roaches?

I've been seeing roaches in my house, and I'm rather terrified of the things. A stupid fear, I know, but I can't help it. What's a good quick and effective way to ride my home of the disgusting little beasts?

If you want a natural method and their are no small children/pets to get into it..

Borax mixed with powder sugar.

Or I heard bay laurel leaves repel them, so maybe leave some in the cupboard?

You can also do the traditional things roach motels, a bug bomb[ew! gets on everything] or call an exterminator, roaches are tough.

Numerous foggers, sprays, motel/traps, was used before hiring an exterminator - - each method reduced them but did not eliminate them until a friend in Louisiana told me about Bengal Gold (not regular).  It is now sold online:

If there is very little, you can get rid of them by killing them individually or with roach traps.

If there is ALOT, then you'd have to give them some poisons that poison their insides but not instantly kill them. This is because the poisons can be excreted and the roach dies in a few days, while baby roaches like to eat the faeces of adults. This is what exterminators use, and i'm not sure if its available over the counter. You can clear out an entire colony this way.
