you usually cant just pick your nickname, it just happens because of something you do or a shortened version of your name.

I disagree I don't think a nickname has to be related to your name. However if it doesn't then it needs to relate to your personality. I do agree that you shouldn't pick your own nickname, it may be considered a bit self centered. If you don't like the name your parents gave you find a way to alter it that suits you better.
