  1. Schwinn

  2. Trek, Giant, Specialized, Gary Fisher, Kona, To name a few.

Schwinn? just fell out of my chair laughing.

The points Steve makes on the brakes are good ones, but depending on what model you have the quality of the brakes comes in to play, box store bike brakes do not do a very good job of delivering good consistent reliable braking. If you like your bike but not the braking consider a brake upgrade.

  3. kona orange giant cove canondale trek

you could by a ok bike and just upgrade the brakes and tires. form v brakes to hydralic disks, and the tires to maxxis,

    maxxis are good but expensive.

  4. If you want a good Mountain Bike don't go with Shwinn or Raleigh, unless its an older Raleigh. Don't go with Canadian Tire or Walmart or Zellers or anything of them.

The best mountain biking companies are: Rocky Mountain, Gary Fisher, Kona, Trek, Specialized, GT (Good and cheap), Giant, those are some of the best brands

  5. You can change the brakes or the brake levers if what you want is just better brakes.

Most (if not all) bike brands only make frames, and buy everything else from several manufacturers.

In fact, maybe the best bike brands sell only frames, and you have to build the bikes with whatever you want (within some limits).

But, those "best" bike brands are not necesary better for everybody, or even required to have fun and a reliable bike.  It just depends on what you want and expect.

If you're looking to change bikes, look at Giant (Trance and Reign models), Specialized (Stumpjumper and Pitch), Trek (Fuel EX), Cannondale (Rush, Prophet and Rize).

More expensive brands, look at Santa Cruz, Turner, Titus, Intense, Knolly, Foes and others.

  6. The brand of bike is of little relevance. The important issue is that the brakes are in good condition correctly set up and properly adjusted.  In particular the braking surfaces of brakes deteriorate and go hard with age. They should regularly be replaced even if not worn down - annually?  If the brake surfaces have hardened it is very noticeable that braking is either fierce or non-existent whereas,  with newish (softer) brake surfaces,  braking is progressive.   Also with newish brake surfaces juddering caused by imperfections in the rims will be mitigated.   From a mechanical point of view rod operated and/or caliper brakes are probably least effective. Cantilever brakes sit somewhere in the middle with V brakes probably the best rim operating brakes. Cable operated or hydraulically operated disc brakes come into their own when wheel rims become wet  as all rim operating brakes are rendered less effective.  Finally it is important to check the headset as play there can affect front braking.
