What's a really nice and impressive champagne (or wine)?

lol ... someone suggested white zinfandel!  I don't know any "real" wine drinkers who would even touch it! ...That's a pink, party wine and very UNimpressive!  ...  Piper Heidseck (sp?) makes a wonderful champagne.   Try some good California merlot or cabernets which should be less than $20/bottle......

If you really want to impress someone and not spend a lot of money then Then go with Comte Audoin de Dampierre (or just ask for Dampierre), you want the Cuvee des Ambassadeurs.  It is under $30.00, it is THE champagne served at all official functions at French embassy's throughout the world.  Basically, you can say it is the official champagne of the French Govt.  It's very easy to find, especially in socal. Wine is priced according to rarity, not according to quality.    The difference between a $20 bottle of wine and a $100 bottle of wine is the number of cases produced.   If the person you are buying for does not know wine then you would be wasting your money spending more than 20 or 30 for a bottle.   If the person you are buying is a serious wine drinker then he/she may be more aware of the more expensive bottles.  

For Champagne, Dom Perignon or Crystal are two of the more known top end bottles.    You will be spending a minimum of $100 on these bottles.  

For wine, I suggest finding out more of what type of wine your gift recipient likes.   Red/White, what type of grape or region.  Then purchase a top end bottle within that category.

depends on the occasion,

go to your nearest wine store/broker that has a somolier (sp?) tell him what kind of occasion this is for and he will suggest the best wine or champagne

i love white zinfandel wine it is the best i have had the high priced wine but i perfer this one to me it is by far the best it comes in different price range and different brand names and even differeent flavors

Go to a local wine store, or specialty food store that has a wine consultant. Tell them what you want and your price range, they'll find something good.

Basically anything besides the usual brands you find in the grocery store are impressive.
