i love playing/watching/teaching volleyball and i've been scouring the classifieds online to see where i could help out and coach at a local high school... i definitely want to be a coach or assistant coach for a men's team in the spring but i was also contemplating coaching for a women's team this fall... however, i just graduated from college and i'm just worried that because i'm not THAT much older, it might look weird for a recent male college graduate to be coaching high school girls... or am i just overthinking it??

  1. You're overthinking it.

As long as you maintain professionalism, being a recent college graduate is perfectly reasonable for coaching high school girls.  But I stress that you must remain professional in every sense, because you may be under a little closer watch than the married 40 year old female mother of two who's been coaching for 10 years.

I think that you should never coach individuals who were your former teammates.  I.E. Graduate college before coaching at your old high school, wait four years after college graduation before coaching your college team.

  2. Any age really.

    Our coach is 46

But the assistant coach is 24

    Your over thinking it.

  3. any age up until your 18th birthday - have a LOT of fun my man ;)

  4. I helped my High school's girls team out as an assistant coach, I was only 17 at the time. I think it's more about the level of experience that you have versus how old you are. I now coach a women's college team and I am a lot older but that's only cause I decided to work on my career and not being a coach.

Good luck your not to young to coach.

  5. I am in high school and I am always uneasy with they younger male coaches. I know this may not apply to you personaly but it just seams like they are there for the wrong reasons sometimes. So as long as you work them hard and your not the young coach that jokes around with them I am sure it would be fine.

  6. I think that if you remain professional, there really is no age limit for assisting. As a head coach, maybe 21 would be the earliest age. But then again, if a school is confident in your experience and knowledge of the game, they just might pick you earlier.

    and...

Do NOT start a relationship with a player as an assistant, as that can ruin your name, even though you think no one knows about it.

  7. Its not that weird, the Athletic Director at my High School is only like 22 years old.
