I want to replace the stairs going into the basement with solid oak ones. There are 10 steps. What do you think a rough cost would be to have someone do it?

Thanks!

  1. ther are many questions left unanswered.

Is it a finished set of stairs ?

Open risers into an unfinished basement ...???

    And why Oak ???

If its a basic set of steps with open risers and 2x12 treads it shouldnt cost more than $800 in the USA

  2. A good carpenter can demo out the old steps and install the new ones in 2 days. A fair wage for a good carpenter with tools is $25.00 - $35.00 per hour plus materials. $600-$750.

I suggest you forget the oak. No place is going to have 2" x 12"'s in oak (I would use these for the treads) and 2" x 12" 's for the stringers or stair horses.

Ask your carpenter to use "Scaffold Plank" this is select grade douglas fir or Southern Yellow Pine, which is rated to use for scaffold boards, They will have to order them.

My choice would be to use Southern Yellow Pine which should be available at your local lumber yard.

*Make sure you put up handrails.
