I'm flat water rower trying to figure out which open water scull will be suitable for my small frame (120 #). I'll be on the coast of Maine for a while and I want a boat that can maneuver around rocks and boats in the harbor and also handle rougher water. I tried out the ECHO and found it to be fun but heavy for me to carry, and was pushed around by the wind in the ACE model. Some other models I was considering were the Maas flyweight and a couple of boats from Little River Marine in Florida.

  1. You should be able to get boat weights from the dealers or the maufacturers.  Years ago, Maas boats were much lighter than many other open water boats.

My Dad used an Alden on his own in his 60's and 70's.  He devised a little trailer he roped/bungied to one end, so he just carried the other end and rolled it into the water.  He did that for years, launching at a beach.

I have an ancient Pocock fiberglass trainer.  The guy I bought it from added a small brass, half-moon shape, 9 inch long fin to the bottom, using tiny brass nuts and bolts to attach it to the small half inch keel.  That helped in the wind a bit.  Two would work better.

Contact Maas and others directly and see what they recommend.
