  1. In the basic dichotomy of the US educational system, vocational education tends toward certificates and licenses as opposed to academic education which yields degrees (e.g. BA/ BS, MA, PhD).

Vocational education involves training people for specific jobs (trades, crafts, technical jobs, etc).  Programs are often 2 years to complete as opposed to the longer academic programs.  The educational methodology is centered on competency-based education. This approach consists of an integration of knowledge and skills the students master and demonstrate their mastery (sometimes via internships).  After completing their studies in school, they must then pass a licensing exam in order to actually be employed in their state.

In many states, high schools and community colleges are the places students encounter vocational education programs.  Some states have specific training centers operated either by the state or private organizations.

Sometimes there is a bit of faculty rivalry and status issues surrounding the dichotomy of vocational vs academic education.  But fundamentally, whichever type of education you get, most of us have to try to find a job.  So the casual stereotype of vocational education being equal to training to get a job still applies to academic degrees as well.

There is an interesting article you should read ("The Tyranny of the Diploma") which points out the the previous belief that a college degree earns more income over a life time may not be as true as it was in previous decades.  You can read the article at http://www.forbes.com/forbes/1998/1228/6...

    Hope this helps.  Best wishes.

  2. It prepares learners for careers that are based in manual or practical activities, traditionally non-academic and totally related to a specific trade, occupation or vocation, hence the term, in which the learner participates. It is sometimes referred to as technical education, as the learner directly develops expertise in a particular group of techniques or technology. Hoped I helped you! :)

  3. Vocational training involves getting you ready for a job.

Usually it includes testing to see what job you would be best at.  Then, you would be given lessons which would be useful in getting the job you want.

  4. Vocational training is continuing education that helps prepare for the future. If you were in special ed your state vocational rehab office will help.
