I'm looking for a word(s) to describe a person or incidence where one person said something and the other person misinterpreted what that person is saying...For example:

Tamara told John that she had a good time with him at dinner (or any gathering for that matter).

Upon hearing this, John assumed that Tamara was hitting on him and that she likes him, when infact, Tamara was just trying to be polite and nothing more.

What words can be used to describe Johns misunderstanding/misinterpretation of Tamara's friendly jesture?

  1. Hmm....hard, I would say a misinterpretation???

  2. Tough one. The only word I can think of is "misconstrued"
