What's all this about Melbourne clubs folding?

I was shocked by the answers to my last question. Again, I am not Australian, but I thought all of the Melbourne clubs had great support. What other clubs are in trouble?

This is depressing.

  1. The Kangaroos are the one team that is in serious trouble.  The AFL has been trying to encourage them to move to Gold Coast, Queensland - a booming city near Brisbane that is attracting Australians from all over (including football states).  However, the 'Roos stated that they wouldn't move and so the AFL will be putting an expansion team there.

Back in 1996, the Fitzroy Lions (a struggling Melbourne club) merged with the Brisbane Bears and became the Brisbane Lions.  They are doing great now.   Also in that year, Footscray, in an attempt to widen their appeal to the western suburbs of Melbourne in general, changed their name to the Western Bulldogs.  Their finances aren't great.

Ironically Melbourne have the smallest membership in the AFL.  They've got some pretty serious money problems, too.

The main problem is that you've got 10 teams in and around Melbourne.  The place is football mad, but, money and fan base will stretch only so thin.

The Kangaroos (used to be North Melbourne) are the only team that I see have a possibility of folding in the next couple of years, but I don't think they will.

  2. the roos are idiots, and deserve to fold

the afl tryed giving them an exit from there troubles but no.

an club with heritige else where is better then a dead club

  3. Yes, several Melbourne clubs will fold in the not too far future.

North Melbourne already have the skids under them. The Bulldogs are skating on thin ice. Melbourne are hanging on by the skin of their teeth. St Kilda are only going through the motions.

  4. dont know where ya got ya info from, at the Moment the Kangaroos are they only team in real trouble

  5. Richmond will be next

they have not many financial supporters

not many of them can find a job

  6. Yep. It's true. Several are on their last legs.

It will be a better competition without them anyway. The AFL can see that and are trying to relocate teams out of Melbourne.

  7. kangaroos and richmond were in trouble but they'll still be here for 2008

  8. no, calm down, only 2-4 are in trouble, the roos, demons, bulldogs and maybe saints.

richmond tigers made a 1 million dollar profit, so they are fine, cant win on field but doin well off it. they have heaps of supporters unlike clubs not going well on the field and near the bottom, carlton have many aswell, thats why there will always be carlton, collingwood, essendon, richmond and geelong.

  9. Richmond is in trouble because they never win hardly any games

  10. Yes, several are on their last legs.

Jeez, it will be good when they have gone. They are a draing on the AFL. Only friends and relatives go to their games.
