  1. yes, alzheimers is a desease of the mind, you forget things slowly, but surely, and your mind relates back to your child hood years most of the time,

  2. Alzheimers is a mental condition typically occurring at older ages. It is the most common form of dementia and caused by the brain breaking down it's protein. Alzheimer patients will begin to lose their memory. First their short term memory will fade away. After they loose the ability to remember recent events, their long term memory steadily goes down hill. After this has been completely obliterated, they will lose their ability to speak, walk, and in extreme cases eat.

My grandfather and my mom's aunt had severe alzheimers. My grandfather would forget where he lived. So taking walks was dangerous because he might get lost in should be areas. He completely forgot who his grandchildren were. He started to forget who his children where. Eventually, he lost his ability to talk. He would grunt instead. He died of a heart attack.

My mom's aunt was not so lucky. She lost her ability to walk and eat. She would need to be spoon fed. Eventually they had to move her mouth and force her to swollow. Shriveled and bed ridden, she had no clue about the world. Seeing her like that still bothers me today - 15 years later.

I hope you are not asking because a loved one has been diagnosed with it. If so, I'm dearly sorry. Treatment is still being developed. Make sure you spend a lot of quality time while you can.
