  3. Australian accents differ from other English-speaking nation accents in that accents across Australia don't differ geographically. Someone from Sydney sounds, for all intents and purposes, identical to someone from Melbourne or Perth.

Australian accents differ socio-demographically. Usually, your degree of education, general upbringing and other factors influence an Australian accent. Generally, There are agreed to be three different Australian accents: Cultivated Australian, Standard Australian and Broad Australian.

Cultivated Australian is a very refined-sounding accent. Uniquely Australian but still having some British overtones. An example of this is Alexander Downer, Australia's ex-Foreign Affairs minister.

Standard Australian is what the majority of Australians sound like.

The Broad Australian accent is the really "bogan" "occa" accent with a really nasal overtone, often characterised by a lot of Australian slang.

A typical "occa" accent is one that would be characterised with hoons, rowdy drunks etc. It unfortunately is the international stereotype for the Australian accent. A lot of people were surprised to find out that I was Australian, saying that "I didn't sound Australian at all" in my travels overseas, particularly in New York.

If you've ever heard of Kath and Kim (an Australian parody/sitcom) Kim's accent is an exaggerated version of a female occa accent
