    Rootkits are modifications to the kernel of an operating system that can give a remote user complete access to your system. Unlike other types of spyware, they are hard to find and remove, because they control the operating system itself. An anti-virus running on the system can't see it, because they have to ask the kernel to do certain tasks, and if the kernel has been rootkitted, it will deliberately supply false information.
