Policies have 2 dates:  

CNP (canceled non pay) and LMD (last money date)

the lapse in coverage is the time between.  You have the opportunity to reinstate your policy prior to the LMD, after that date you have to buy a new policy.

I presume you mean a lapse.  A policy that is not renewed by you lapses, the coverage ends.
