Question:

What's an easy and fun way to remind my son how to dress??

He's 8 and in the last 6 months I've started introducing "rules" to dressing like not mixing black and brown, not wearing his church button up shirt with warm ups, etc. I was thinking using a funky font and just making a "sign" to put on his dresser since he can read. I don't want to be rude about it or nagging, but he's old enough to dress correctly. Any ideas of what "rules" to put on there??

  1. Do they still sell grranimals? Idk if you have heard to them, but they make clothes for children that have animals to match clothes. Example: Giraffe shirt goes with giraffe pants. I wonder if they make them for 8 year olds? Look 'em up!

  2. just buy him sets that go together. TEACH him, that is your job. It isn't nagging or rude. How is he supposed to know? Set out the clothes and explain what pants go with what shirts. Simple. You are making this way too complicated.

  3. Yes...tell him how good he looks when he dresses nice and ignore him when he doesn't...you will silently avoid confrontation and make him feel good when he dresses nice.

  4. Take pictures of him in various outfits that go together and put them in one of his drawers. You can write something on the back like "striped shirt with jean shorts" or "button down long sleeved shirt with corduroy pants." That will help him make choices that are appropriate. Most boys around that age don't care what they're wearing or if their choices go together; I know my 7 year old doesn't!

You could also reward him with something small (10 extra minutes of video games; not having to clear his plate from the table after dinner; an extra book at bedtime) if he comes up with an appropriate outfit on his own.

  5. what about making it rhyme

    brown to black kill jack

    nice and sweaty stay smelly

    or something kind of funny

ONLY WEAR CLEAN CLOTHES- this drives me mad when I see my kids wearing dirty clothes when they have clean ones

  6. Typically, a boy aged 8 dosen't really care about their clothes and I LOVE THAT!  (Try having girls who want to pick out their outfit to take the trash out!)  But, the way I got mine, ages 9 & 11 to start dressing a little more appropriately was to take time out once a week and "assist" them in picking out outfits for the entire wek ahead (play clothes and clothing for if you leave the house.)  This is easy to do if you can get the cloth "shelves" that have the days of the week on them.  This also helped to ease many morning arguments of "you are NOT wearing THAT out of this house!"  Good luck!
