What's an open rehearsal? Can you please explain to me what it is?

I keep finding local "open rehearsals". What in the world is an open rehearsal? I've tried Wikipedia and some other sites, but I thought it would be easier to ask my question here.

An open rehearsal is one the general public can attend. Closed rehearsals are private, a general audience is not allowed. Only the production people, stage hands and perhaps some close friends are permitted.
