the andes mountains are called Andino....so what would the country be?

I am married to an Argentine.  He has never heard the Andes refered to "andino"  Andinio is the name of a person that lives in the Andes.  

There is no short for Argentina.

My partner is from Argentina and they don't abbreviate the name of the country.

They do abbreviate the word for someone who is from Argentina to Argento (male) and Argenta (female).

Also, they sometimes abbreviate the city, Buenos Aires, to Baires (pron. B-eye-res).

(I have never heard the Andes called Andino, perhaps that is a Chileno thing ....though I never heard it there either!)

I'm Argentinean so I can tell you that an right abbreviation will be: ARG. and the Internet two letters for Argentina are AR. So if you see a site www.mysite.com.ar it is from Argentina.

But we will never say about something "it is very arg." never even in very casual language. We address Argentinean things like "Argentina(o)". In English  I guess you can say that something is very "Argy" (Ar gee) but it will be an "Very American" thing not something that argentineans would understand.
