A 16 ga needle is slightly smaller than the lead of a pencil. It is one of the larger needles we use in medicine. Most needles you get a shot with are about a 25 ga. They get lerger as the number gets smaller. Most hospitals use about a 20 or 22 ga for an IV. A 14 is about as large as we use for an IV and it is about the size of a pencil lead or maybe a little larger.
