Question:

What's better ... a Nikon D40 6.2MP with a 18-135mm lens OR a Nikon D40 10.1 MP with a 18-200mm lens??

I've narrowed down my choices of DSLRs and am probably going to get one of the above kits. Is it better to have fewer MP and better lens or vice versa. Any input is appreciated!!

  1. I wouldn't be too dazzled in this megapixel race. Many times the sensors/lens/image processors are not up to delivering all that increased megapixel count, but in this case when choosing between a APS-C sized sensor of the 6MP range (Nikon uses Sony sensors) and the 10 MP in the D40x, the 10 Megapixel is a better choice and you will have need for that resolution when printing large format pictures.

Most Nikon lenses are good solid performers and both the 18-135 and the 18-200 have good reputation.

Although the 18-200mm lens is a allrounder and if you're intrested in optimum sharpness for landscape or architecture I'd choose a lens with a little less zoom factor (less is more sometimes when it comes to zooms).

PS: Neither of these cameras have a full size sensor; check out Nikons homepage if you need verification of that.

  2. There are some misinformation from previous posters. Nikon D40x is not a full frame camera. D40x is identical to D40 except for (1) higher megapixel image sensor (10 vs 6), (2) faster continuous image shooting speed (3 fps vs 2.5), and (3) wider ISO range (100 to 3200 vs 200 to 3200).

And D40x has been replaced by D60, which improves D40x with improved image processor, self cleaning sensor, image stabilized kit lens, d-lighting, and more.

Between the two choices (D40 with 18-135 vs. D40x with 18-200), I would go with D40x if they cost the same, but honestly, I would just buy D40 kit (which includes 18-55 kit lens) from a reputable dealer with an intention to buy 18-200 or something else at later time. There are too many shady online camera dealers.

  3. I'm pretty sure you'll want the higher MP's. That's what makes the picture so clear and precise.

  4. Nikon D40 only has 6.2mpx

    Nikon D40x has 10mpx

The nikon D40x uses a full frame sensor and requires full frame lenses or FX lenses.

The regular D40 uses an aps-c sensor and can use DX lenses, but is also compatible with fx lenses.

Both the 18-135 and the 18-200 are DX lenses.

If you are looking for some equivalent lenses in the FX format, you wont find it....you will need 2 lenses at best....over $1000+ each !!!......and boy are they huuuuuuugggeee and heavy.....which means you are going to need a tripod too...

This is what the 18-135 and the 18-200 will do on a D40x

Some people will probably give me a low rating...but read for yourself.
