Both are niche formats for 1080p resolution video and high definition audio.

From a video and audio quality perspective they are virtually identical. From a hardware perspective HD DVD is marginally superior on average (mainly because it is a complete spec, while Blu-ray players vary largely in capability) but this difference is slowly decreasing.

HD DVD hardware starts at lower price, but is about the same at the high end.

Disk cost about the same.

Only about 800 movies are available on both formats combined ... slightly more in Blu-ray format than HD DVD. Compare this to 80,000 DVDs in the catalog!

Different studios support different formats, so you can't pick one and expect to see all available HD movies.

So, other than that, if you are asking for a prediction as to which format will "win", or which format to buy now .... follow AWolf's suggestion. But no-one can really answer with anything but their opinion. The answer has not "been wrote yet".

Both are excellent but I think BluRay just nips it, but only just. I have a PS3 and Xbox HD so it maybe that the Xbox isn't as good. You should demo both in a controlled environment i.e dedicated Home Cinema shop or install with a dedicated BR and HD player. C.

This question has been asked here at least 100 times! Go to the top of any page and you'll see "Search for questions:" Type in "bluray vs hddvd", hit Search, and you will get dozens and dozens of answers. Probably enough to keep you reading for an hour. Then, when you are through, you'll find that no one can answer your question because they are too similar in performance, and it is unknown which, if either, will prevail in the format race.
