What's better: half or full lease?

I'm looking into leasing a horse for the summer, and I was just wondering what would be better.

I have been riding for a couple years now, just lessons, I have never owned or leased a horse before, and I just want to lease for the summer so I can get a feel on how to take care of a horse and all that.

  1. Go for a half lease.. and if you feel that your ready (physically, mental, and money wise) then talk to the owners.. im sure they wouldnt mind you doing a full lease.. but its alot of repsoniblity and time. Half lease is more afforable and more efficient.Full lease and its practically your horse..but with that comes fees....

    =)

  2. It's all really up to what your goals are. If you just want to have a horse to ride a few times a week but don't plan on making it a complete commitment a half lease would be better, I think.

  3. Half means you share the horse with another rider.  It's less expensive (usually about half the cost) BUT there are some down sides:   you may not get access to the horse on a day you wanted to ride or show.   The other rider migth not be as skilled or as kind as you, and if he/she makes the horse sore, *both* of you won't be able to ride.

An important question also is who pays for & handles vet & farrier care. Some leases include this and some do not.

Which is better really depends on your own situation & needs.

  4. I am in the same situation right now and I just started a half lease. I don't trust myself to jump right into a full lease with out getting to know the horse. Half leases tend to be less expensive too. I like the half lease too because you still get to ride but don't have to worry about feeding or farrier or anything like that.

  5. I start a half lease in 10 days!

I chose half lease because if something goes wrong, i wouldn't have the experience to handle something if it went wrong

If youhave no problems with the half lease why don't you do full lease net year?

    =]

    hope that helps

  6. It all depends..both are good. With a full lease, you pay for everything and you get the "real" experience of it being totally your responsibility, nobody else is there to help. w

With a half lease, you usually pay half of the major costs and share the riding time with somebody else. you won't have to visit  the horse every day and check on it and make sure you ride him or her all the time because somebody else is there to help with the work

It all depends on the experience you want and how much time and money you can spend on this horse. GOOD LUCK!

  7. i would just go half. It is cheaper and you get the same experiance from it. If you lease from and owner some times they will give you some of their days if they can't ride. If you half lease too people will be their to help you learn because with  a full lease you are kinda on your own.

  8. Half leases are usually less expensive, but you don't get to ride as much. I used to half lease my horse, and the girl only got to ride 2 1/2 hours every week (not that she wanted any more!) On a full lease, it's more like completely owning the horse and you have much more freedom
