What's better in the following sentence - by or towards?

Can I say like that - " I'll be ready by Thursday / 5 o'clock/ etc.? "

Also, can I substitute the preposition "by" by "towards" without changing the meaning?

  1. I think "by" sounds more natural.


  2. "by".

    "Towards" would be wrong.

    It's also possible you mean "finished" rather than "ready". "Ready" means that you will be available to do something rather than that you have completed a task.

  3. The other answerers are correct. The only way you can use toward(s) in the time sense would be eg It gets light towards sunrise - where by would be wrong (because it starts to get light before sunrise).

    Btw we substitute something WITH something else - and because say is a transitive verb you need to ask Can I say this?
