  1. "Ballroom Blitz"

is a song written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and originally recorded by the glam rock band Sweet. It was released as a single in 1973, where it reached number 1 in Australia and entered at number 2 in the UK singles chart but failed to go to number one. The song reached number 5 in the States and was one of that country's biggest hits of 1975. "Ballroom Blitz" appeared on the U.S. version of The Sweet's 1974 album Desolation Boulevard. "Ballroom Blitz" remains one of The Sweet's best-known songs and has been covered by a variety of artists. The song itself was written about the Grand Hall of the Palace Theatre in Kilmarnock, Scotland, after the band were forced off stage by a barrage of bottles. [1]

    Ballroom Blitz - Krokus (1984) #31 US

However what is not stated is the comparison in years and the music available at that time.  Even though Krokus reached #31 in 1984 with the Blitz, it was THE tune that put them into the spotlight in the US as well, coming at the pinnacle of the Age of Heavy Metal.

A cover of Krokus' version of "Ballroom Blitz" is featured as a playable track on "Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s".

Well . . .  All Right by Buddy Holly.  Santana's version gets much more airplay on classic rock stations.

Tina Turner's, Proud Mary did well, but flew off the shelves when Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded their version of it.

Ain't Too Proud to Beg by the Temptations did well, as did the Rolling Stones adding new life to it, shortly after.

Heard It Through the Grapevine, by Marvin Gaye did slightly better when Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded their version of it, at least it's more well-known.

Sweet Jane, by Lou Reed and Velvet Underground got more airplay on alternative stations when Cowboy Junkies recorded it.

Because the Night, originally by Bruce Springsteen and  Patty Smith went crazy when 10,000 Maniacs recorded it both studio and "Unplugged" versions of it.

  12. A good portion of Led zeppelins songs were written by blues artist's, and infinitely more popular. Actually the same could be said for a bunch of the English invasion bands.

  17. How about TalkTalk's "It's My Life", covered by No Doubt?

  18. I will always love you by Whitney Houston. It was originally sung by Dolly Parton but Houston's cover is infinitely more popular.

  19. Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers

    Original: Stevie Wonder

  20. UB40's Red, Red Wine was more popular than Neil Diamond's original.

Roll Over Beethoven was ELO's first U.S. Top 40 hit and gets more airplay than Chuck Berry's original.

Though it didn't 'surpass' Bob Seger's original 'We've Got Tonite'; the version by Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton was 'just as' popular.

Speaking of Seger; his version of Tina Turner's auto-biographical 'Nutbush City Limits' is one of the best songs on his 'Live Bullet' album.

Speaking of Tina; her version of Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' was good enough to kick her solo career into mega-stardom.

The Monkees' I'm A Believer was more popular than Neil Diamond's original (but Neil may have wrote it for them and recorded it 2nd; I'm not too clear on this one).

I think most of us know Guns N Roses version of 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' better than we know Bob Dylan's original or the 200 other remakes done over the years by other artists.

Barry Manilow's Mandy was a HUGE hit for him in the 70s.  It was a cover of the less-successful u.k. hit 'Brandy' written by Richard Kerr & Scott English.  'Brandy' was a punk song that Manilow 're-arranged' into the love song it became.  He changed it from 'Brandy' to 'Mandy' because another band (Looking Glass) had their own version of 'Brandy' out at the same time; though it too sounded nothing like Barry's first Gold Record.

    :)

  25. Jeff Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". There have been countless covers of the song, but Buckley's is most famous, and it's more famous than the original. I actually think it surpasses the original, because Jeff Buckley completely owned it when he sang it.
